The major turning point was the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Key events: In 1979, the Iranian monarchy supported by the US was overthrown. Revolutionaries established the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. After this event, diplomatic relations between Iran and the US completely broke down. Since then, both countries have considered each other major adversaries.
